2. The NL Scholarship (previously referred to as the Holland Scholarship)
Another Netherlands fellowship programs for international students is the NL Scholarship, formerly known as the Holland Scholarship, is designed to assist non-European Economic Area (EEA) international students pursuing bachelor’s or master’s degrees in the Netherlands.

Scholarship Benefits:
The scholarship is for €5,000 and will be awarded in the first year of your studies. Please be informed that this scholarship does not cover full tuition fees.
Eligibility Criteria
1. You are not an EU/EEA, Swiss, or Surinamese passport holder.
2. You are not eligible for support via the Dutch student finance system.
3. You are not eligible to pay the lower tariff of the tuition fee, known as the statutory tuition fee.
4. You have never studied at a Dutch university or a Dutch university of applied sciences.
5. You have completed your pre-university education outside The Netherlands
Application Process
Compose a letter of motivation, specifically for the NL Scholarship, answering the following questions:
- Before February 1, submit an online application for admission to one of the above-mentioned bachelor’s programs at Leiden University.
- Once you have submitted your admission application, navigate back to the Apply screen within your online application platform. Access the Scholarships tab and check for the NL Scholarship option, which will appear in the scholarships section if you meet the eligibility criteria.
- Indicate that you want to apply for the NL Scholarship and upload your scholarship motivation letter and financial plan (in 1 pdf file) where indicated before the NL Scholarship deadline.

3. LUF International Study Fund (LISF)

4. Walraven scholarship
The Walraven scholarship is open to outstanding master’s students who are not Dutch. One of the Netherlands fellowship programs for international students, the scholarships are meant for physics or astronomy bachelor’s degree holders who want to attend Leiden University to pursue an MSc in Astronomy and Instrumentation. Successful candidates must have a strong academic record and require financial assistance.
Eligibility requirements
- You have to be a student who is not from the Netherlands.
- A bachelor’s degree in physics or astronomy, or an equivalent, is required.
- Your previous study results should be of outstanding academic merit
- You have no other financial support (e.g. scholarships, grants) for your master’s study
Obligations
- During your astronomy master’s studies, you must pay the statutory home tuition fee to Leiden University.
- If you stop your astronomy master’s studies for whatever reason, you have to inform the Education Office of Astronomy as soon as possible at masters@strw.leidenuniv.nl.
Exclusions
- If you are a student of Dutch nationality, you are not eligible to receive a Walraven scholarship.
- The Walraven scholarship cannot be used in conjunction with any other funding source for your master’s program.

- Write a brief statement motivating why you satisfy the two conditions of a) outstanding academic merit and b) need for financial support. Make sure to include your full contact information and send it to masters@strw.leidenuniv.nl
Amount
The Walraven scholarship has a one-year expiration date and is renewable conditionally for a second year after the first is completed. If you are awarded a full scholarship, the master’s program in astronomy research tuition will be waived to the equivalent of the home charge, and you will get an annual living expense allowance of up to €11,000.
Scholarships, in part, may also be given out. A monthly stipend is awarded as part of the Walraven scholarship. Should you decide to discontinue your master’s program in astronomy for any reason, the Walraven scholarship funds will be immediately terminated.
