About Heinrich Boll Foundation
This foundation, which bears Heinrich Böll’s name in honor of the well-known German author, focuses on environmental preservation, democratic principles, and social justice. The Heinrich Böll Foundation was founded with the following goals in mind: promoting equality between men and women, preventing conflict in crisis areas, protecting human rights and democracy, preventing the devastation of the global ecosystem, and protecting individual freedom from excessive state and economic power. We have strong relations with the German Green Party (Alliance 90/The Greens), and as a think tank for green ideas and initiatives, we are a member of a global network that includes more than 100 partner projects in about 60 countries.
The Heinrich Böll Foundation fosters an environment of intellectual openness while operating autonomously. We currently have 30 worldwide offices and maintain a global network. We support gifted, sociopolitically active undergraduate and graduate students in Germany and overseas, and we work closely with 16 state-level Böll Foundations in each of Germany’s federal states.
Heinrich Böll’s call for citizens to participate in politics is one that we heartily embrace, and we hope to encourage others to follow suit. These scholarships also place a strong emphasis on international student collaboration, which promotes a progressive and diverse learning environment in Germany.
The Heinrich Böll Foundation grants scholarships to approximately 1500 undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral students of all subjects and nationalities who are enrolled in universities, applied science universities (also called “Fachhochschulen”), or art universities (also called “Kunst-/Musikhochschulen”) annually.
In addition to having stellar academic records, we anticipate that our scholarship recipients will be politically and socially active and actively support the foundation’s core principles of justice, democracy, self-determination, ecology, and sustainability.
Please note: We only accept applications online, and written evidence of competency in German is required (minimum requirement: “Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang” Level DSH 2 or “TestDaF” Level B2).
